FBI Agent credited by J. Edgar Hoover for firing the fatal shot killing John Dillinger and assisting in the capture of "Baby Face" Nelson.
Winstead returned west after Baby Face Nelson's death, serving at the El Paso and Albuquerque offices. In 1942, he was reprimanded by Hoover for insulting a female reporter and accusing her of being a Communist sympathizer. Hoover demanded an apology and ordered his transfer to OK City; Winstead told Hoover to "go to Hell" and resigned in 1943.
As an Army Intelligence officer during World War II, he was responsible for outside security for the secret atomic bomb project at Los Alamos.
Letter Written By J. Edgar Hoover to Charles Batsell Winstead on July 23, 1934:
Mr. C. B. Winstead,
Division of Investigation,
U. S. Department of Justice,
1900 Bankers Building,
Chicago, IL.
Dear Mr. Winstead:
I have been advised by Mr. Purvis and Mr. Cowley that it was you who shot and killed John Dillinger. I Wanted to write and to express to you not only my official, but my personal congratulations and commendation for your fearlessness and courageous action in this matter. We are all indeed proud of you. It is particularly gratifying that Dillinger was shot and killed by one of our own men. I am informed that the manner in which you handled yourself on this occasion was indicative if the usual calm, deliberate and at the same time fearless manner which has reflected itself in your work since you entered the Division.
I wanted you to know that I did personally, as well as officially, appreciate the effort and application which you have given to this case from its inception, and in particular your courageous act of last evening, in shooting and killing this notorious desperado.
Sincerely yours,
(signed) J. Edgar Hoover
OBIT FROM NY TIMES; Aug 5, 1973, pg 53:
"CHARLES WINSTEAD, FBI AGENT WHO SHOT DILLINGER, DIES AT 82"
Albuquerque, NM - Aug 4: Charles Winstead, who is credited with firing two of the bullets that killed John Dillinger outside the Biograph Theater, in Chicago, in 1934, died yesterday at the Albuquerque Veterans Hospital; he was 82 years old.
Mr. Winstead, for many years considered one of the most accurate pistol shots in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, also spent much of his early years in the agency chasing the gangster team of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow through Texas and Louisanna. But his meeting with Dillinger on the night of July 22, 1934 was the most publicized event of his career.
He helped gun down the ganster when he emerged from the theater accompanied by two women, Anna Sage and Polly Hamilton.
Mr. Winstead later recalled Dillinger was flanked by his two women companions when he emerged from the theater about 9:30 PM.
It was Anna Sage, "the woman in red" who had tipped off the F.B.I. that Dillinger would be attending the showing of "Manhatten Melodrama" at the Biograph.
Mr. Winstead recalled Dillinger attempted to run into an alley and reached for his gun. The agents fired simultaneously. Dillinger began to "spin like a top and fell dead."
A laboratory analysis revealed that two of the bullets that hit Dillinger were fired by Mr. Winstead.
Mr. Winstead joined the F.B.I. after having served in World War I. He retired in 1943.
Survivors include his widow, Maude, two sons and a daughter. | Charles Batsell Winstead

From Jeannine Hodge
1737 06 08 Hodge, John(N. Riv. Shen. Orange Co Va) Windseeth, Elisabeth
I believe that John Hodge married Elizabeth Winstead (written as Windseeth). They were married June 8 1737. The marriage is recorded in PA. St James Church records, Lancaster Co. Pa. The location of the marriage is:North River, Shenandoah, Vulgo, Cockel Town in Orange County, the Colony of Virginia. The minister also married two other couples at the same time: Jacob Thigh & Mary White; Daniel Hoolman (Holeman) and Elizabeth Cartley. When looking at legal records, you will find Daniel Holeman's name connected with the Hodge family transactions. I believe that John who was bound to Andrew Bird is as follows:
John hodge was evidently 21 yrs old in 1760 when he married Hannah Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Hannah) Newberry. Marriage is recorded in the same church records as father. He is found in Orange Co.N.C.records 1764. Received a land grant for 225 acres Caswell Co. N.c. Aut 1779. John and Hannah had 4 children. Samuel D.;Issac;David;Elizabeth. There are numerous records concerning the Hodge & Winstead families in Orange, Caswell and Person counties N.C.
Daniel Holeman had a son, Jacob, who had a daughter, who married a Martin. There was a law suit over land in which John and Elizabeth were mentioned. This is the only connection with Martin I have found. I have been researching this Hodge family for 15 years. Have never found Asahel. Does anyone have a clue where he was at the time of his parents death? Hope this helps. Jeannine Hodge | Elizabeth Winstead

===========================================
Source for many of these entries is handwritten notes from Lillie Blanche Winstead
Reid who is referred to as Blanche W. Reid in the following notes that she appears to
have written in about 1970. She is the first child of Rosell Thomas Winstead and Nellie Blanche Keen.
Note #1: Blanche W. Reid had 1875 as year of birth but WWI Draft Registration
shows year as 1873. "T. F. Winstead had 2 brothers" source: Blanche W. Reid
Note #2: Underlined names show name that person went by
Note #3: Alice Craddock ..source 1 of middle name and birth date is the NC Death Collection. Source 2 is correspondence between Blanche W. Reid and the Craddock family when she asked Alice's middle name and the reply was "Augusta. Note that Thomas Franklin's grandmother had the name of Augusta Winstead.
Note #4: Source of marriage date is 1900 census
Note #5: Blanche W. Reid wrote Caroline Amerson in her notes. Caroline Amerson is name on Wiley Winstead's death certificate for his mother and Wiley is the brother of Thomas Franklin Winstead
Note #6: 1900 census shows Dec. 1898; Blanche Reid's notes show 1898; death certificate shows Dec. 2, 1898
Note #7: For birth date, 1900 census shows year 1894, Blanche W. Reid's notes show July 31, 1893, the death certificate shows July 1894 with no day, the obituary says 48 years old, death certificate says 48 years old.
Note #8: Social Security Death Index for date of birth and death
Note #9: Death certificate says Martha "Susian" but I have not found Susian or Susan on another other record. She was called Susie by the family and signed her letters as Susie.
Note #10: Blanche W. Reid is only source found for middle name. She also said that "Wm. Wally died at 55 years of age." The 1900 census says he was born Feb. 1849 and so he probably died about 1904.
Note #11: Source of middle name is family notes from Blanche W. Reid.
Note #12: Death certificate shows death on 13 July 1942. Newspaper obituary shows death on July 13. Blanche W. Reid's notes show death on June 13 1942 but this must be an error. | Lillie Blanche Winstead
